Die spanische Künstlerin Sally Gutierrez und der brasilianische Künstler 
Alex Villar nahmen beide 1999/2000 an dem Whitney Independant Studio 
Programm in New York teil. Ihre Arbeiten thematisieren auf ähnliche Weise 
den Begriff von Raum im urbanen Kontext und sie entwickelten ein Konzept 
für eine gemeinsame Ausstellung, bei der ihre Arbeit als Dialog 
funktioniert, der im theoretischen Bereich von den Kunstkritikern Sabeth 
Buchmann und Simon Sheik fortgesetzt wird.
Die Diskussionsveranstaltung mit Sabeth Buchmann und Simon Sheik findet am
Samstag, den 12.05.01 um 18 Uhr in der Buchhandlung pro qm, Alte 
Schönhauser Str. 48, Berlin-Mitte, statt

Sally Gutierrez setzt sich seit einigen Jahren mit Innenräumen auseinander 
und verwendet dabei dokumentarische Strategien.  In der Ausstellung zeigt 
sie Fotografien aus der Serie „Blue Window Objects“ und das Video 
„city-game television“.
„Blue Window Objects“ ist eine Serie von digital bearbeiteten Fotografien, 
in denen Sally Gutierrez die Idee  des „non-place“ und „all-place“ in Bezug 
auf  Fenster thematisiert. Gutierrez wählte Objekte aus, übermalte sie blau 
und positionierte sie noch im Innenraum, aber an der Schwelle nach außen. 
Eindimensional und flach stellen sie auf die Weise Fragen nach dem Übergang 
von privat zu öffentlich in Architektur, Fotografie und Zeichnung. 
Gleichzeitig wird die Vorstellung von der klassischen Perspektive hinterfragt.
Das Video „city-game television“ entstand während ihres Atelieraufenthaltes 
im World Trade Center. Das Video stellt Bilder von Fenstern, Kreuzungen und 
Stadtansichten Interviews gegenüber, die die Absurdität des permanenten 
Informationskonsums im Kontext des World Trade Centers kommentieren.

Alex Villar’s Arbeit ist eine Videoinstallation, die sich mit Zwischenorten 
und der Zeit, die man an solchen Orten verbringt, beschäftigt.
Die Installation ist eine Rohrkonstruktion, die von außen mit schwarzen 
Stoff umkleidet ist und eine Videoprojektion in sich birgt. Die 
Installation funktioniert als provisorische Architektur: äußerlich eine 
Baustelle, wird der Betrachter, sobald er hineingeht, mit einer 
Gerüstkonstruktion konfrontiert, die einen Teil des Raumes quasi absperrt. 
Das Video wiederum, das in der New Yorker U-Bahn aufgenommen wurde, zeigt 
den Künstler, wie er in durch Geländer und Gitter abgesperrten Räumen auf- 
und abläuft.
Damit lenkt Alex Villar die Aufmerksamkeit auf den privatisierten Teil von 
öffentlichem Raum, in dem der Menschenfluß komplett regelt ist. Der Zweck 
solcher Orte folgt einer entgegengesetzten Richtung, sie existieren am 
Rande der Rationalität, entstanden durch die Innengestaltung der U-Bahn als 
kleine Inseln der Zusammenhangslosigkeit und des Widerspruchs.

Sally Gutierrez and Alex Villar are currently based in New York, where they 
both participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program 99/00. Realizing 
that their work had similar concerns in relation to notions of space in the 
urban context, they articulated a series of two artist shows in which their 
work would function as a point of dilaogue about such ideas with art 
historians-critics Sabeth Buchmann and Simon Sheik.
The panel discussion with Sabeth Buchmann and Simon Sheik will be on 
saturday 12th May 2001 at 6 p.m., bookstore pro qm, Alte Schönhauser Str. 
48, 10119 Berlin.

Sally Gutierrez  has been working with documentary strategies and interior 
spaces for the last years. For (Not a place) she will show photographs from 
the series "Blue Window Objects" and a single channel video piece: 
city-game televsion.
„Blue Window Objects“ is a series of intervened photographs in which Sally 
Gutierrez explores the idea of the window as both non-place and all-place. 
Gutierrez blotted out the objects, drawing over them in blue,  making such 
objects, -still 'inside' but posed on the threshold of the 'exterior' 
world- one dimensional and flat, and thus questioning the borders between 
private and public in arquitecture, photography and drawing, and the 
classical notions of perspective.
'city-game television' was shot and conceived during Sally Gutierrez's 
residency at the World Trade Center (Lower Manhattan Cultural Council). The 
video juxtaposes shots and inteviews about windows / crossings/city views - 
commenting on the absurdity of the simulation of instant consumption of 
information offered as another service, in the World Trade Center context.

Alex Villar's piece is a video installation that dwells on dead space-time, 
this portion of the day when one lives between places. The installation is 
comprised of a tubular structure wrapped in netting material that houses a 
video projection. The structure functions as a kind of provisional 
architecture. >From the outside, it refers to a construction site - a site 
where work is ongoing. Once inside, the visitor has to negotiate the 
interior space with a scaffolding structure.
All the scenes were shot in the subway in New York City, this privatized 
portion of public space where the flow of people is thoroughly regulated. 
The pursuit of such spaces follows a contrary orientation, it is the 
pursuit of spaces that exist on the edge of the rational logic governing 
the interior design of the subway system, those small pockets of 
incoherence and contradiction that can be accentuated and perhaps reversed.
